Good full red. Redcurrant, plum, spices and meat on the nose, with a musky hint of woodsmoke: very syrah. Then sexy, dense and sweet in the mouth, with wild red and darker berry flavors complicated by pepper and minerals and given shape by nicely integrated acidity. This concentrated, spicy wine conveys insidious intensity without any impression of weight. Very nicely balanced syrah, with a long finish feature a fine dusting of firm tannins.

While the classic Felton Road florals are here, it is the sweet core of berries that marks the nose with a touch of sandalwood. The palate has serious textural weight, but as always with Calvert, it’s carried tautly with the fruit held firmly in its core. Sweet berries and redcurrants rather than cherries or plums. The tannins have a slightly inky rather than chocolate imprint, which are framed in dark roses through the finish.

A complex interplay of aromas and flavors. Lemons, limes, greengages and peaches intertwine with whiffs of wood smoke, barbequed sweet corn and grilled bacon. Soft palate entry that gradually expands to become rich and full bodied. Back-bone of minerality and grapefruit-like acidity keep it tight and focused.

The 2010 Fletcher Family Vineyard Riesling has intense floral aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle over lime juice and mandarin peel. Light bodied and very crisp with a touch of residual sugar to balance, it gives a long pure finish. Drinking now, it should cellar through 2015+.

At Neudorf this rich fruit concentration is balanced by lovely retained mineral acidity resulting from a happy combination of clay gravel soil, clone (small berried Mendosa) and cool autumn nights.

With natural attributes of such power and bright mineral focus, it is for the winemaker to use his skills and imagination to gently craft a wine of texture, balance and complexity, a wine that has a unique sense of place.

Aspect, terroir and various altitudes all help make Man O’ War’s wines perfectly placed to please the wine drinking public. Pinot Gris is fairly new to New Zealand and this effort is a winner. Easily approachable, well balanced, nicely fruited and far above the world-wide sea of blah pinot grigios.

The 2010 “Trinity” is a robust but salivating blend of the classic Bordeaux varieties. A strong Cabernet family dominance gives the wine fantastic deep crimson colour along with the aromatics of pure blackcurrants and cigar box. Merlot adds ripe plum and red fruit notes.

The palate is strong but juicy. The dark red fruits again dominate on the palate with hints of chocolate and licorice.
This is a wine that will drink beautifully in its youth due to the rich, velvet-like palate. However, there is sufficient strength to reward medium term cellaring (3 to 5 years).

Our proprietary blend of four varieties gives a true expression of our Gimblett Gravels Vineyard. The proportions of the blend change most vintages to reflect conditions of the year and to ensure that we meet a certain ‘house style’. It is a wine of richness with an abundance of black fruit flavours and a long structured finish complete with dusty tannins of the area.

“The 2010 Riesling has a youthfully muted nose giving notes of lime slices, kumquat and fresh grapefruit with nuances of crushed stones and white pepper. The light bodied palate reveals a medium style in terms of sweetness with a relatively low alcohol (9%) and plenty of citrus and mineral flavors with a good backbone of crisp acid that lingers long into the finish. It should drink best for 2012 to 2019+”

Are you one of those people who just doesn’t get why so many others love Pinot Grigio from Italy, that just sort of tastes like fruity? We don’t really get that either. Our Pinot Gris is picked very ripe, and carries a little extra sweetness. But it’s balanced with flavor of fully ripe, baked Anjou pears. The wine is smooth and easy-drinking, and is perfect for starting out the night.

The Arneis grape is indigenous to Piemonte in North-West Italy. Its name means ‘Little Rascal’ in the local dialect. This describes in two words just how difficult this grape is to grow and vinify. Summer 2008 was stunning in Gisborne and this made for a very early harvest. Given Arneis’ rascally reputation we ensured that our winemaking inputs were kept to an absolute minimum.

The Te Muna Road Pinot Noir is a single vineyard wine from the old, stony soils of the higher terrace of the Te Muna Road Vineyard. The Pinot grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts before spending over a year in small French oak barrels. This is a dark, opulent wine with silken texture and layers of aromatics and flavors.

Bright aromas of cherry, raspberry, dried sage and a hint of smoke make for an enticing nose. On the palate the taut, focused fruit tannin sits seamlessly in this medium weight wine with a silky savory finish.
